Just a Thought...

Yo guys,

It's good to see that some serious progress is being made on Desparation: Alexander's Plight and I'm having fun working on it.

Anyway here's a random thought conjured up at 11:30PM for the absolute final submission on July 9.

So we will have our award winning game that will be bigger and badder than Munto Age or Microwaves but here's an idea that could go with the artbook considering it goes ahead and according to plan .

While I was on the phone earlier, it was bought to my attention that along with the artbook we could if we wished make Desparation the short novel and all we would need is the manuscripts from the game to make it work.

Now im not saying it will be a proper 355 page so novel because we dont have that kind of time but if we are letting the artists showcase their work got in the form of that art book, how about the story team have that kind of oppertunity as well?

So to quickly hash out we would have our game, an artbook and possibly even a small novel to turn in.
How many of the groups would actually do that and we can take it away with us wherever we end up next and be proud of what we accomplished as the great GS8 and GS9 will definitely have some work to do to compare ;).

Obviously I'm aware all this would require a lot of heart, dedication and time but it's not impossible by any stretch of the imagination.

Of course I may just be tired, delusional and blowing smoke xD

Share your thoughts with me anyway and feel free to ask any questions :).

Nate

Artbook Pictures

Apologies that this is late going up, as you know family matters have taken my time of late. Here is a selection from the books we looked at previously.

Modern Warfare 2

Tekken 6

Security

Just a thought in terms of the security/ guards are we married to the idea of having the bald headed door man look. I’m not against it but here’s another style of look worth considering. Its futuristic faceless and they can all look the same and still be realistic.

Another idea I like is the idea of may be the guards being sort of like robots, I know it sounds kind of wollocs but I got the idea from a song video “transform ya” by Chris brown look at the video to see what I mean skip to the middle because the songs not to every ones taste (not exactly the middle Nathan just near the middle ish)

Blood Combat System (BCS)

hey guys Tom here!! :D

For the FMP i came up with the game's gameplay mechanics to help fit around the game lore and make it feel unique. so here is the basic draft. ill be posting more during the week please feel free to add any ideas there needed big time!!

Blood Combat System

The Blood Combat System works like this! As the sword is alive in a way it can truly bond with its wielder in battle by connecting the wielders veins with the swords and uses the wielders blood to access new feats of abilities he hasn't seen before. As you fight you generate blood fury which you can see charge up by the sword steadily turning red aka filling up with blood (up to 3 charges) and once the sword is fully charged with blood you can unleash a devastating attack (depending on the amount of charges) which can obliterate your opponents. The sword can also use blood activate to use defensive style abilities to either temporarily increase health or by thickening your blood to reduce incoming damage for a short time.

Possible Ideas

Just looked through the story (haven’t read it all but I get the general jist)
First off the names Alexander, Sebastian and Adela are amazing.
The story looks really really good and everything ties in nicely.
That being said I have go a few things i want to talk about when the story teams next all together you don’t have to agree if don’t want to and leave a comment if you wanna call me out on anything.
In the story (the bit I’ve looked at)
· it’s not crystal clear as to when the will is left it seems like it left after the dad dies but that sort of contradicts its self because the mother dies years before right?
· If the families so rich why is Alexander doing any work at all?
The only other thing iv got to say is that the stories too linier its great as a skeleton for the story but it needs more twists and turns like:
· Maybe because Alexander is a product of the dad cheating the stepmother only allows him to live in the house as a servant and she scowls at him or has a go at him
· Or maybe the older brothers obsession with getting the sword sort of drives a wedge between the two and the sister begins to show compassion for Alex and lets him escape later in the story.
· Or perhaps you have to decide between retrieving the sword that you’ve dropped and saving Adela from certain death even though she hates you
Any way these are just some ideas we’ll talk properly on Monday.

And I Almost Forgot...

I know I forgot "The Elder Brother" in that last post but I didn't feel the need to change him for the 1st edit but just in case here is his original backstory with no edits as of yet, I am in the process of doing his first edit now.

The Older Brother

Name: Sebastian Aeuhert (Pronounced Au-Hare)
Height: 6ft 9in
Age: 39
Bloodtype: AB+
Weapon Name: “Saberhagen” (One Handed Broadsword)

Story:

Born into a noble bloodline Sebastian is the first and eldest son thus he is the rightful heir to the Auhert family name. As a young boy Sebastian grew up with the finest of what life had to offer him, the family servants would tend to his every whim and call at his mother’s behest, much to the chagrin of Sebastian’s father the great warrior Raphael Auhert.
Raphael was adamant that spoiling the young Sebastian was reversing his teachings of discipline and work which Sebastian was learning through combat and that this in turn would lead to the boy being blinded and unable to accept the world as it truly is, instead forever living in a fantasy world where only wealth and splendor exists.
Over time Sebastian’s feelings for his father changed to feelings of anger and eventually resentment over what his father was doing to his mother who was pregnant with their daughter Adelia, to him and to the family. But silently he found comfort in the fact that one day he would surpass his father and would make his mother proud.

Years passed and Sebastian learned from his mother that he was a brother again to a baby boy named Alexander.
Growing up Alexander was notably closer to his father, which made Sebastian’s relationship with his brother troubled, however Sebastian dismissed it as the boy did not know any better and eventually he will be forced to grow up and learn the truth. However as a result of this he often found himself spoiling Adelia who was growing up and becoming quite demanding of her big brother.

As time continued conflict in the family became worse and eventually led to Raphael leaving the Auhert family estate with Alexander .

After his parent’s split Sebastian watched his mother fall into a downward spiral of depression.
Along with Adelia he frequently spoke with his mother about the split and she confided in the two regarding the truth of their father, themselves and the Auhert family, She also made Sebastian promise that no matter what happens he would take care of his sister Adelia.

Now at the age of 39 Sebastian is the head of the Auhert family and is the epitome of law, order and justice, he has a deep set loathing of people who fail to uphold these basic principles and also resents anything or anyone that would dare tell him otherwise. As the eldest sibling his mother wrote in her will that the great sword “Agnedynestra” is to be passed onto him upon her passing.
Time passed and inevitably the time came for the sword to be bestowed upon Sebastian, however when Sebastian went with Adelia to the family vault to retrieve what was rightfully his, he was shocked to discover that Agnedynestra had been stolen.
Enraged that the sword was gone Sebastian pondered alone in his quarters as to how this could have happened; he worked tirelessly to form a conclusion as to how it happened, but it wasn’t until Adelia checked on her older brother and asked him “Who knew where the vault was?” and “Who knew about the sword?” that the answer was clear as crystal.
Realising this and with chuckle Sebastian said, “My dear baby brother…”
With this knowledge Sebastian along with Adelia began to plan how to retrieve the sword and their brother at any cost.

Character Backstories 1st Edit

Yo, Dudes

To comply with the project lead's request I'm uploading today's 1st edit of the character backstories, As I type I am in the process of writing the 2nd edits so some of the information will be out of date but this is mainly for reference and to bring the people who were absent up to date somewhat.

The Younger Sister

Name: Adelia Aeuhert
Height: 5ft 3in
Age: 27
Bloodtype: AB+
Weapon Names: “Aurelio” & “Voletta” (Daggers)

Story:

The second born into the Auhert family, Adelia is very smart to for her age and has an IQ around 200 points.
From birth she has spoilt by her older brother Sebastian who would do anything to keep her appeased and as a result of this she has become very demanding of her brother.
In one of her demands Adelia stated she wanted to also be trained in a weapon style like her brother but unlike him she wanted a style that makes her look enchanting and elegant as well as being lethal, to which Sebastian agrees to train her in an art of her choosing.
Deep down beneath the spoilt girl exterior she respects Sebastian because of his loyalty to her and their mother unlike Alexander who in her eyes is nothing more than a “Betrayer” for going along with their father’s way of thinking and denouncing them entirely
After the two left she noticed her brother was talking more in private with their mother, catching on that something wasn’t right she again demanded that her brother take her with him to one of these chats, though reluctant Sebastian accepted that she should know the truth and that nothing should be hidden away from her.
After learning the truth from her mother Adelia spent her days continuing her training and ordering her brother about, however she did have a new found respect and appreciation for her mother and swore to herself she would be like her.
It wasn’t until her mother passed that she really began to change, Adelia struggled to come to terms with the loss and in fact blamed Alexander for their mothers death.
But through her sadness she realized her brother was now the head of the family and would soon become the new wielder of “Agnedynestra”.
Suddenly life wasn’t so bad she began to contemplate how she could now use her brother’s influence as a means to get others to do things for her while also still having leverage on her brother. The concept was something that appealed to Adelia very much just as much as some other things she had been thinking about…

If the will stated that both parents needed to be dead before the sword is passed on then…

He had to die.

Without her brother knowing she organized and orchestrated a remorseless but successful attack that left her father dead, so now with both parents out the picture the sword could pass on to its rightful owner.

When the day came for her brother to acquire the sword she accompanied him to the family vault to watch him claim it as his own but like her brother she was also disgruntled when she found it wasn’t there.
No sword meant no control and no control meant no sword, growing more agitated by the second she ordered her brother to find the one responsible and retrieve the sword.
In the days after the theft she began to formulate how this theft was possible until one night while she was trying to sleep she worked it out, it had to be there was no one else…
Her thoughts proved to be correct after confirmation came from one of the guards who reported they saw a suspicious figure (More detail on attire needed) trying to escape the grounds into the night.
She rushed to her brother’s quarters to find him still trying to work out the problem at his desk.
She walked up behind her brother in a rare moment of affection hugged him.
She whispered something to him and suddenly everything fell back into place.
The control, her brothers, the sword they could all be hers…
With that she began to plan with Sebastian how they could get revenge and reclaim the sword and avenge the death of their mother.

The Main Character and Youngest Son

Name: Alexander “Alex” Aeuhert
Height: 6ft 2in
Age: 20
Bloodtype: O-
Weapon Name: Agnedynestra (2 Handed Greatsword)

Story

The youngest son of the great warrior Raphael Aeuhert, unlike his siblings Alexander grew up with his father and denounced the noble life of wealth and splendor in favor of training with his father since he didn’t want to ride the coat-tails of his father’s success instead opting to carve his own legacy and path.
This was noted by the other siblings who in turn had nothing really to do with him as a result since they were both closer to their mother.
It wasn’t until a fight between his parents occurred and his father ended up leaving that Alexander was forced to make a life changing decision, either stay with his siblings and mother or leave with his father. The decision was an easy one, Alexander knew that if he stayed he possibly would be pried upon and so he left with his father.
Over the next few years Alexander trained using his father’s style eventually becoming a formidable warrior like his father was.
However Raphael was unwell and with every passing the day life ebbed and flowed out of the once mighty warrior.
Sensing that the end was near Raphael called Alexander to tell him the truth about the sword and about the great task he had to undertake.

“My son, you will be the true wielder of Agnedynestra, the sword resonates with your soul unlike the others therefore you must steal it from them before it’s too late and it falls into the wrong hands”
Those words stuck with Alexander like a bad itch but he knew what needed to be done the question was when?
Then one night under the veil of darkness he returned home for the first time in years and while avoiding detection he successfully managed to steal the blade from the family vault.
Energy pulsed through Alexander as he grasped and held the hilt of the sword, now with the power that his father spoke of Alexander escaped into the night and became the new custodian of the blade Agnedynestra. Now all he needed to do was hold onto it even if it meant fighting his own family…

Brief story

Stroy Development.

As a noble warrior he swore he would protect his family with the cost of his life, however his wife took advantage of this which has drove him to near death and now he only just realised that he was wrong since it is leading to negativities in the two siblings.
The father then as a younger son but with another woman who happens to die giving birth to him, he did this because he knew that the two siblings where going to turn evil as they were idolising their mother. The youngest son doesn’t know about this and he think the two siblings are his real brother and sister.

When the mother died the two siblings blame their younger brother who was at the scene when she died, they think that he could have saved her but decided not to because of things he’s been through, this makes the two siblings hate him more, also making the youngest brother more isolated from them.

Before the father died he wanted to pass his sword down to one of his children, however he found his wife's will which she hid from him for many years so that one of the siblings could find it and keep it a secret from their father, the will stated that the sword had to go to the oldest child, So he tells his youngest son to steal the sword before his brother and sister get it.

The father then passes away and the will is read out to the children, but while the will is read out the youngest child manages to steal the sword however, he is caught on the act so security is called to capture him. He flees to the city where he thinks he has lost them, but his brother and sister are still searching for him and a reward his offered if anyone finds him. When they capture him the let their men fight him aswell as themselves.

This is just a brief version which Billy and I will be working off I think to get the completed version done.

Overview

I decide to produce a brief overview of the game for the deign doc heres what I managed to get.

Our game is a 2D side scroller set in a fictional city slightly set in the future where the character has to keep the sword safe from his evil brother and sister.
The game play will be fast paced this includes both the running and fighting aspects of the game. The running aspects will be similar to the Mirror’s edge 2D game, while the fighting aspects will be what similar to Murasama the Demon Blade.

This is a screenshot taken from Mirror’s Edge 2D which shows the player being able to jump across from building to building which are far apart. The other screenshot shows the player running up the wall; this is an element in which we would like to include in our game, so that if the player is stuck because loads of enemies are around him he would use this to escape.

This screenshot is from Oboro Murasama: The Demon Blade which shows the fast paced fighting style, with the number of hits shown on the screen, something that we could implement into our game.

I'll gladly take feedback and make any changes that need to take place.

Just a reminder

This development blog is part of our FMP so why are some individuals waiting to talk about their progress in person at Confetti? Just post it on here, that way another part of the work is underway and it's keeping everybody informed, not just a few people.

Urban attacks?

I was just thinking about our game and thought that if all the combat was with the sword it may get a bit repetitive so what about some interesting melee combat?
I thought about some break dancing styled attacks that the guy could do with his sword- such as sticking the sword in the ground, taking a quick run back then towards the weapon, grabbing the handle and running up a nearby wall or just lifting himself with the handle and kicking nearby opponent.

I got the inspiration from the free running world champion who combined break dancing with parkour to win the world title earlier this year. Take a look and give some feedback.

main character

ok ppl so lets think about our main man MR.X we want him to be kool right and we said on monday that the anti hero idea was good to go right? (feel free to correct me if your aginst it)
so what makes kool?
think about what makes our character special (better than every one else in the game)
  • the sword could be magical
  • he could have some sort of mild power (extra strong, fast or skill full)

why are ppl trying to kill him
  • is the sword he carrying enchanted and every one whants it (like the ring in lord of the rings)
  • is he an off spring of the devil whos denouced his thrown and is now hunted by his siblings (simliar to cloud strife in advent children)

what are his motives

  • does he want supreme power
  • is out for revenge (IMO this is way over done pluse you have to comuicate to the player that theres a long winded relationship between the main player and the antagonist)

personaly im not married to any of these ideas but they might get the ball rolling and lead to some amizing group ideas.

a few things that i would like to steer clear of are

  • if hes going to ba an anti hero lets make him ruthless (similar to the desperation concept)
  • no rescue stories if the bad guy was that bad he'd just kill the girl without thinkin twice if you make him say "im ganna do this then this" and end upnot doing it we'll make the bad guy efectivly look like a pussy and rouining the game.
  • say he was a mercenry he'd be pritty closed off guy so he'd need a huge emtional envolvement to even take part in the games events we should try to keep him as closed off as posible we dont need an anti hero who tells us his emtions so lets try and find a way of getting his feelings across while still makeing him look Arrd.

any way thats all thats onmy mind at the mo so tell me what you think .

My bad

I wasn't clear enough on my last post. My idea wasn't for the game to be fast paced, only the combat scenes where there's a horde of opponents coming at you. This is where the speed and fluidity of using a sword will come in- think DMC/Viewtiful Joe but with more opponents that only take about three hits to kill.

I've been working on character concepts from scratch, I've only been working on the head so far otherwise every sketch would be a mess. I've been thinking about doing some sketches of one of my best mates, his personality might suit the game too, he's easy going but if things turn nasty, so is he.

Looking at the videos

So I've just sat down and read threw all the posts and watched the videos. The Mirror's Edge game looks sick btw. And like has given me inspiration for the game anyway, imagine that kind of fluidity of running and jumping up and down buildings, but not that fast obviously cos of the whole sonic thing that was mentioned it's tooooo fast and I don't know bout anyone else but when I get on Sonic I try and run threw the level and don't feel like I've accomplished much.

I also feel with that kind of fluidity in the moves it would go really really well with the anime feel we want from the game, imagine a tall, thin guy with a massive sword on his back scaling the level with the utmost ease. And it would make for some cool fighting sequences, running up and then backflipping off a wall to land behind an enemy with his back to you to get the drop on him lol.

And the whole minigame/puzzle thing I think the whole idea in putting these down IS to slow down a game. that's why they are used. Because a gamer wants a breather and to recuperate every once in awhile. With the jumping around and the fighting it might be a good idea to give the player a safe haven, maybe when the player goes into a building, sometimes there can be puzzles inside.

Lastly cos I'm goin on abit I just wanted to reiterate my idea for him being a Mercenary. This would explain his ability with a sword and ability to move around the level and would tie in beautifully with the anti-hero thing. And to be honest with the way we want the game I feel like we should maybe move the game back over to Urban Japan, that way we can have some beautiful neon scenery going on in the background but still have a very dark and gritty setting.

Im done :D

Kickin' it Old Skool... Again...

You know something? The more I sit on the bus listening to my Ipod the more I get inspiration since its a good time to think without distractions and I know Kiwi will break my neck for more retro stuff but hey.

Ok here's another 2D SS from the Amiga called Zool 2 or as it was dubbed in the day "The poor man's Sonic". I could have picked its' predecessor Zool but I decided Zool 2 was better just because it was endorsed by Chupa Chups. Since it was released in '93 just after Sonic (I think?) it obviously didnt do as well as Sonic did which was a shame because it was an amusing game.

Now before you flame me for signs of Sonic fanboyism hear me out, Even with Sonic on the market IMO there was something truly inspired, marvelous and cool about zool (:P).

And since we are on the topic of endorsed games let's look at Global Gladiators also on the Amiga

Ok the main gameplay one is obvious and I threw a bonus stage shot in there because again maybe putting something like this in the game would be fun... Possibly as the only solution for completing a puzzle? or in laymans terms beat the game in the game to progress. I'm not saying make a complex game just something to divert the players attention for a few seconds a "Pause menu pocket of peace" if you will. Besides who wouldnt laugh at the game insulting you when an anvil landed on your head and the game retorts "Anvils don't make very good hats do they?"

My question for you is this though what did both these games have that Sonic didn't apart from endorsements with Mcdonalds and Chupa Chups respectively?

The answer IMO is appeal to kids because who doesn't know Chupa Chups or Mcdonalds and surely if they endorse it kids will buy it right?
Sonic wasnt designed to be played by younger children and odds are those that did probably died in the first level anyway.

Anyway that point isnt too relevant as it's about target audiences and making gameplay both fun and accessible but it's just a little something-something to keep in mind from a business perspective that a lot of developers will forget because they focus on the older fanbase.

But thats my random thought for the day, take what you can from it good or bad ;)

Concerns

Ok as most of you know; Kiwi has suggested an "alley level" in 3D from a third person perspective very much in the same style of the Sonic 2 Chaos Emeralds mini game, I'm uncertain about this because it may slow the gameplay down.

As you can see above, the gameplay is fast but for the mini game in Sonic the only player interaction required was directing Sonic left or right and occasionally pressing A to jump over oncoming obstacles, there was no need to move him forwards or backwards, attack any opponents or interact with the environment and this is where it may get difficult for the player if he's in an alley in third person perspective; they may no be able to see their opponents or environments that are possible to interact with.

Here's a clip from Viewtiful Joe 2; as you can see, it's easy to see all of the environment and as I suggested in Gins lesson last week (sick!) cell-shaded graphics make 2D games with 3D elements look amazing. Also, picture this as our alley level and with the dude I'm yet to design but with a horde of enemies charging at him; it could be an immense beat 'em up!

Mirrors Edge controler test + 2.5D side scrollers

okk to I've just put my xbox controller into the lap top and game the mirrors edge game ago like that.
two reasons why
1. to see if a controller makes the game any more interesting to play(it does)
2. to see if its worth making a 2D game for a console (you can decide that)

so0o if any ones interested in giving it a go on a controller (and doesn't want to do it at home.)
ill bring my lap top in on Monday get in touch or comment if your interested.

also here are some modern 2.5D scrollers that we could probly draw inspraition from

Bionic Commando Rearmed

peronaly i like the look of this game but the floating platforms that the player jumps on make the game feel too much like a realistic looking mario.

Shadow Complex

sorry about how poor the vid is but this game looks realy good.

i keep editing this post because keep finding more recent 2.5D games
this ones called
Trine

kiwi

More 2d side scrollers

wow its hard to follow nate's post but heres the video of game i showed you in class
Muramasa The Demon Blade

looking at this vid the game appears to have believe it or not too much fighting (i know sound stupid)so when makeing ours may be we should look into adding some more puzzels aswell.

and heres on of another fast paced 2d game
Mirror's Edge 2D

this one seems to have more jumping and other factors but looking at it, it sometimes feels like sonic.
also at 2:12 in the vid above theres an example of how we could work in climbing the buildings.

the mirrors edge one is a free online game if you wanna giveit ago heres the link
http://mirrorsedge2d.com/#

any way thats all i've got thus far take a look and tell me what you think.

Throwing It Out There.

So this is where the GS8-2 musings on the untitled and possibly soon to be epic game will take place. Very nice indeed! :D.

Anyway I'm not killing my friday to do 16Bit Nexus nonsense this is business, so to follow Craigs lead, show my age and to get the ball rolling on my end I will highlight some possibly lesser known Retro 2D games that follow the path we are going since everything today is 3D :P. Hopefully we can see what elements made them good or bad and draw inspiration from them for our own game. If anyone is really bored check them out on youtube to get the jist of how it moves and sounds and I guess this could count towards Sarge's homework.

Game 1: Disney's Aladdin (Mega Drive)

As you can see we have bright colours and a have a good theme in place, well albeit the one of the genie but hey silly things are interesting too :P.

Game 2: Streets of Rage 2(Mega Drive)

If you haven't played this, boil your head and get it on emulator and see why its still rated one of the best!

Game 3: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Mega Drive/Arcade)

Ok the first 2 images of the moonwalker game were taken from the MD and it looks good but compared to the arcade version in picture 3 it was lousy and wasn't as polished. I put this in mainly to show you the comparision of the same title but why one sucked beans and one was immense, I definitely recommend youtubing these 2 to see my point.

Game 4: WWF Betrayal (GB Color)

I was hard pressed to find a good image of this game because 1 its old and 2 it's on a handheld so again youtube or emulate it.

Game 5: The Lion King (Mega Drive)

This one was an interesting side scroller that utilised height as well as length to progress in the levels. As you can see Simba starts off as a cub and eventually becomes an awesome adult lion that comes with more power, more moves and a new attitude. This picture was thrown in because maybe growth like this in the main character is important?

Anyway that's my 2 cents for now hopefully I've contributed a little bit into some good old school stuff that's 2D side scrolling, even if we can take small elements like "Good HUD" or "Game X can be improved by..." then we are making progress. ;)

Let the ideas flow!

Hi everyone. {:D

This is the blog for all members of the GS8-2 Dev team to use, whether that be for sharing ideas or whatever it may be.

Let the ideas flow!

Here's one that Kieron mentioned on Wednesday, just to get this blog started.
The game could have houses or buildings to enter that would be accessed from directly behind the character, almost in the background of the level, if you can imagine that in a 2D perspective. The camera would then switch to a different view inside the building, with the entrance/exit door on the left, and the rest of the interior free to explore, until the character would decide to leave from whence they came. That's quite difficult for me to explain without a diagram, but hopefully everyone will remember the point.

Anyway, that's all for this first post. :D
